The Napoleon is a French gold coin of 20 francs containing 5.805 grams of pure gold, created March 28, 1803 by the First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte. This coin bears an effigy profile of the Emperor, and has the same value as the louis, which boasts one of Louis XIV. It remained in use until the First World War. By extension, the name of Napoleon, often abbreviated to "nap" now applies to all parts of 20 French francs in gold. These items were listed on the Paris stock until June 2004. Since then the ratings are made by private companies and vary from one society to another.
